Sometime in 2017, my husband and I decided to look for a home in the woods. After months of fruitless searching, we nearly gave up. Shortly after we agreed to end the struggle, our realtor shot us a must-see listing. Yes! We made it ours.
It’s a mid-century modern gem nestled in 9 acres of abidingly noble forest. Wild turkeys thread themselves daily through towering oak, beech and walnut trees. Lake Michigan is just 10 minutes away. It’s the ultimate lab for our Henry David Thoreau experiment. We’ll still maintain a presence in our beloved city of Chicago, hedging our bets, I suppose.
You see, we felt a yearning for more nature and solace, and we answered that call.
As I consider the tedious job of unpacking the boxes that surround me, I take heart that I am at the beginning of something.
I have no idea what to expect. But I’m willing to be surprised.
“I learned this, at least, by my experiment: that if one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours.” – H. D. Thoreau
I hope this finds you feeling good about the experiments in your life.
